Price: Free

Date: June 15, 2022

Time: 12:00 pm – 12:30 pm

Join our UAB Curatorial Fellow Claire LeSar for a discussion about the archival research she did during her tenure here on artist Hannah Holliday Stewart. Stewart was born in raised in Birmingham before achieving national renown as part of a new generation of women artists, exhibiting at the Smithsonian Institution, the San Francisco Museum of Art, the High Museum of Art, the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts and more. Stewart was known for her large scale sculptures that were inspired by mythology, sacred femininity, physics, and astrology.

Claire will discuss Stewart’s work through the artist’s personal documentation, sources such as Stewart’s drawings, journal entries, and photos of her sculpture and studio. Claire will also discuss the importance of archives to museums in general and the significance of Stewart’s work to the discussion of female modernist sculptors.

ArtBreaks are presented in honor of Joyce Benington’s twenty five years as a docent at the Birmingham Museum of Art. These programs, which bring curators, educators, artists, and creatives in conversation with the Museum‘s collection and exhibitions, have been generously funded by Joyce’s friends, fellow docents, and members of the Art Focus group, which Joyce has guided through the BMA for nearly two decades.
