The artwork of Bessemer native Thornton Dial, Sr. is being spotlighted with the help of an exhibit and activities by the University of Alabama at Birmingham through December 10.

The “I, Too, Am Alabama” is the first comprehensive survey and largest exhibition in Alabama of works by Dial. It is being presented by UAB from Sept. 9 to December 10 of this year.

Dial was born in Emelle, Alabama in 1928 and died in McCalla in 2016. However, he spent most of his life in Bessemer where he worked at the Pullman Standard plant until it closed in 1981. He also planted a community garden in the Pipe Shop neighborhood in Bessemer where he lived.
