Gary Palmer, a U.S. Congressman representing Alabama’s 6th district since 2015, has used his social media platform to criticize Democratic lawmakers over the recent government shutdown, attributing it to their efforts to provide taxpayer-funded healthcare to undocumented immigrants.

On October 2, 2025, Palmer posted on X: “Democrats shut down the government because they want to give taxpayer-funded healthcare to illegal immigrants. No matter how hard they try to deny it, this has been their goal all along. Just look back to 2019 https://t.co/pdCyT2gajg”

Later that day, he referenced a news report in another post: “Fox News: White House memo says Democrats’ plan could spend $200B on healthcare for illegal immigrants https://t.co/b6ZRBQlUFy” (October 2, 2025).

Continuing his criticism into the following day, Palmer wrote: “This government shutdown is nothing more than political theater by the Democrats. Instead of voting for a clean CR to keep the government open for the American people, they are demanding free, taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal aliens. #SchumerShutdown https://t.co/ydKI6nd1mk” (October 3, 2025).

Palmer was born in Hackleburg, Alabama in 1954 and currently resides in Hoover. He graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1977 and succeeded Spencer Bachus as representative of Alabama’s 6th district.
