Inmate Deceased from Suspected Overdose

On September 1, 2022, investigators were notified of an inmate at the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham who had died from what is thought to be an overdose.  According to corrections staff, two inmates were found in a common area and were unresponsive.  Life saving measures were immediately performed.  The measures were effective with one inmate, however the second inmate was unable to be revived.

Detectives are conducting a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suspected overdoses, as well as how the inmates obtained access to the harmful substances.
