UAB Track & Field reported on Apr. 25 that junior hurdler Jasmine Dereje broke the school record in the 400-meter hurdles during competition at the LSU Alumni Gold meet in Baton Rouge. Dereje completed the race in 58.34 seconds, surpassing Nakeshia Thomas’ previous record by .10 seconds, which had stood for 26 years.
The achievement marks a significant milestone for both Dereje and the UAB program, highlighting ongoing progress within the team.
Other notable performances included Lidia Longo running her personal best in the 800 meters with a time of 2:16.39, and Kenlie Nelson achieving her career-best time of 4:37.68 in the 1500 meters to finish eighth out of sixteen competitors. Ava Brooks secured second place in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Josh Reidinger Invitational with a time of 11:27.69.
In field events, Fiona Eastman reached a season-high mark of 3.66 meters on Saturday, tying with Victoria Freeland for seventh place overall and leading their team’s results in that event.
Looking ahead, UAB Track & Field will travel to Starkville next weekend to compete at the Maroon and White Invite. Further information about schedules will be announced later.
