U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) was recently featured as the third guest on the Katie Miller Podcast, following appearances by Vice President JD Vance and media figure Sage Steele.
During the interview, Senator Britt spoke about her experiences at the University of Alabama, her role as a mother and wife while serving in Congress, and her time as a Senate staffer. She highlighted her leadership roles at the university, including serving as Chi Omega Sorority Recruitment Chair, President, and Student Government Association (SGA) President.
Reflecting on a challenge she faced during her campaign for SGA Vice President, Britt said: “Even when I got into SGA, I ran for Vice President of Student Affairs. And after the first debate, a friend of mine came up to me and he said, ‘Gosh, you’re really good up there…It’s too bad you won’t go any further…because you’re a girl.’ It was that moment I thought that I was going to run for SGA President, and you can either be with me or you’re going to have to beat me. But I am going to show people what’s possible.”
Senator Britt also discussed how being a parent influences her legislative work. She stated: “Part of the reason that I am so passionate about so many of the different things we do is for a long time, up until a few months ago, I was the only Republican female with school-age kids in the entire United States Senate and felt like it was important to step up as a mom and say….‘Let me tell you what we’re actually dealing with.’”
When asked about transitioning from staffer to senator, Britt remarked: “How isolating it is. I think you think of the Hill and you look back on your experiences as a staffer, and you kind of remember those, late nights…and just kind of that camaraderie that you have.”
The episode also included lighter segments such as “Would You Rather” and “Senate Confidential,” where Senator Britt talked about her relationships with fellow senators.
