Rep. Terri A. Sewell, U.S. Congresswoman representing Alabama’s 7th district since 2011, announced on September 17, 2025, that the Nancy Gardner Sewell Multi-Cancer Early Detection Act passed unanimously in the House Ways and Means Committee.
In a post at 17:27 UTC, Sewell stated, “BIG NEWS: The Nancy Gardner Sewell Multi-Cancer Early Detection Act just passed unanimously in the Ways and Means Committee! We are one giant step closer to getting it signed into law and giving our seniors their best chance at catching cancer early.”
A minute later, she added a personal reflection about her mother, for whom the legislation is named: “While my mother is no longer with us, I know that she is smiling down from Heaven. The legacy of Nancy Gardner Sewell will live on in the millions of Americans whose lives will be changed by this legislation. “
Later that day at 18:10 UTC, Sewell reiterated the bill’s potential impact and praised her colleagues: “Our Multi-Cancer Early Detection Act would save lives by ensuring seniors have access to the latest cancer screening technology. I commend my colleagues on the Ways and Means Committee for passing it unanimously today!”
Sewell has represented Alabama’s 7th District since replacing Artur Davis in 2011. She was born in Huntsville, Alabama in 1965 and currently resides in Birmingham. Her educational background includes degrees from Princeton University (BA), St Hilda’s College, Oxford (MA), and Harvard University (JD).
The passage of this bill through committee marks a significant legislative step toward providing seniors broader access to advanced cancer screening technologies.
