Samford University freshman Reese Hickey was named Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, according to an April 27 announcement from the conference office.

The award marks the third consecutive week that a Samford softball player has received this honor. Hickey, who is from Georgia, earned two wins during the week—one in relief at West Georgia and another as a starter against East Tennessee State University (ETSU).

In Tuesday’s game at West Georgia, Hickey pitched 4.2 innings out of the bullpen during Samford’s 14-6 victory. She allowed one run on five hits and struck out seven batters. Later in the week, she started game two of Samford’s series at ETSU and threw a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits over seven innings. With these performances, her overall season record improved to 5-1 and her earned run average dropped to 3.10.

Currently in Southern Conference play, Samford holds the second-best team ERA and leads in strikeouts among all teams. The Bulldogs are ranked second in their conference standings, trailing UNC Greensboro by two games.

Samford will host UNC Greensboro for a three-game series beginning Saturday with a doubleheader and concluding with senior day on Sunday. If Samford sweeps the series, they will secure the Southern Conference regular season championship.
