Rep. Terri A. Sewell, who represents Alabama’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, addressed the recent government shutdown in a series of social media posts on October 1, 2025. The congresswoman, who has served since 2011 and resides in Birmingham, Alabama, criticized Republican lawmakers for their role in the shutdown.
In an early morning post on October 1, Sewell stated: “Trump and Republicans are so hellbent on kicking Americans off their health care that they are willing to shut down the government in order to achieve it. My statement on the Republican shutdown.”
Later that day, she marked the beginning of the shutdown with another message: “Day one of the Republican shutdown.” This tweet highlighted her ongoing focus on the political standoff.
Despite the closure of federal operations, Sewell assured constituents that her office remained operational: “Republicans shut down the government, but my office is OPEN and working for the American people! “
Sewell’s remarks come amid heightened partisan tensions over healthcare policy and government funding. She has represented Alabama’s 7th district since succeeding Artur Davis in 2011 and holds degrees from Princeton University, St Hilda’s College at Oxford, and Harvard Law School.
The congresswoman was born in Huntsville in 1965 and is recognized for her longstanding commitment to her constituents and public service background.
