U.S. Representative Terri A. Sewell, who has represented Alabama’s 7th District since 2011, posted a series of statements on September 11, 2025, addressing the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, honoring a local civil rights leader, and responding to threats at Alabama State University.
In her first post of the day, Sewell marked the anniversary of the September 11 attacks by stating: “Today we remember the lives lost and the heroism displayed on September 11, 2001. The atrocities of 9/11 changed our nation forever, but our spirit and resolve were never broken. We will #NeverForget.” (September 11, 2025)
Later that morning, she addressed the passing of Bishop Calvin Woods, Sr., a prominent figure in Birmingham’s civil rights community. Sewell wrote: “I spoke on the House Floor to honor the late Bishop Calvin Woods, Sr. of Birmingham, Alabama. May his legacy live on in the lives he touched and the change he sparked. “ (September 11, 2025)
In an afternoon update regarding campus safety concerns at Alabama State University, Sewell stated: “My office is closely monitoring the situation involving threats against Alabama State University. Violent threats of any kind are completely unacceptable. We are praying for the safety of the entire campus community and for an end to the violence and terror plaguing our nation.” (September 11, 2025)
Sewell was born in Huntsville in 1965 and currently resides in Birmingham. She holds degrees from Princeton University (BA), St Hilda’s College at Oxford (MA), and Harvard Law School (JD). She succeeded Artur Davis as representative for Alabama’s 7th district in Congress beginning in 2011.
