Rep. Terri A. Sewell, who represents Alabama’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, recently used her social media platform to comment on voting rights and electoral issues in the United States.
On August 4, 2025, Sewell extended birthday wishes to colleagues by posting: “Wishing these two dynamic public servants a very happy birthday!!! https://t.co/iS5bPPYPXW”.
A day later, on August 5, she addressed concerns about election integrity and federal oversight ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. She wrote: “From rewriting the rules to targeting election officials to restricting voting access, the Trump Administration is taking unprecedented steps to undermine free and fair elections ahead of the 2026 midterms. On August 6, Sewell marked a milestone anniversary for landmark civil rights legislation while expressing concern over its current status. She stated: “The Voting Rights Act was signed into law exactly 60 years ago. But today, it is on life support after being gutted by the Supreme Court and far-right judges. It’s time for Congress to restore its full protections by passing the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.”
Sewell has represented Alabama’s 7th District since 2011 after succeeding Artur Davis in Congress and remains one of the state’s prominent political figures (https://sewell.house.gov/about/full-biography). Born in Huntsville in 1965 and now residing in Birmingham, she holds degrees from Princeton University, St Hilda’s College at Oxford University, and Harvard Law School.
Her recent statements reflect ongoing national debates about election laws and federal protections for voting rights as legislative discussions continue around measures like the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
