U.S. Representative Terri A. Sewell, who has represented Alabama’s 7th district since 2011, used her social media platform to warn of rising health insurance premiums and potential threats to Medicare and Medicaid, while criticizing Congressional Republicans for their handling of the ongoing healthcare debate.
On October 2, 2025, Sewell posted: “Medicare and Medicaid are being slashed. Rural hospitals are closing. Health insurance premiums are about to DOUBLE for millions of Americans.
But Republicans would rather shut down the government than address the crisis they created.”
A day later, on October 3, 2025, she highlighted a constituent’s story in another tweet: “Virginia Hutchinson of Birmingham is one of millions of Americans whose health care premiums could DOUBLE if Congress fails to act. She is my special guest on this week’s edition of Terri Talks.

Continuing the discussion on October 4, Sewell invited followers to join a live conversation with Hutchinson: “LIVE NOW: I’m speaking with Virginia Hutchinson of Birmingham, Alabama. She is one of millions of Americans whose health insurance premiums could DOUBLE if Congress fails to act. Tune in!”
Sewell’s remarks come amid broader concerns about federal healthcare funding and its impact on rural hospitals and individual insurance costs across the United States.
Representative Sewell was born in Huntsville, Alabama in 1965 and currently resides in Birmingham. She graduated from Princeton University in 1986 before earning advanced degrees from Oxford University and Harvard Law School. Since succeeding Artur Davis in Congress over a decade ago, she has been an advocate for her constituents’ access to affordable healthcare.
