Rep. Terri A. Sewell, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing Alabama’s 7th district since 2011, shared her reflections and commemorations on notable figures in civil rights history through a series of tweets. Born in Huntsville, Alabama, and currently residing in Birmingham, Sewell has been an advocate for justice and equality throughout her political career.

On February 21, 2025, Rep. Sewell paid tribute to John Lewis on his birthday with a heartfelt message: “Happy heavenly birthday, John. I know you would have a lot to say about what’s going on these days. Your leadership and moral clarity are needed now more than ever. I miss you every day.”

Later that same day, she emphasized the importance of John Lewis’ legacy during Black History Month: “John Lewis’ legacy reminds us that while the arc of the moral universe bends toward justice, it doesn’t bend by itself. This #BlackHistoryMonth, let us never forget the sacrifices he made in the name of equality and justice for all.”

On February 22, 2025, Sewell recognized Rev. Ralph Abernathy’s contributions to the Civil Rights Movement: “Today we recognize Rev. Ralph Abernathy from Linden, Alabama. He was one of Dr. King’s closest friends and advisors whose work was central to the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Civil Rights Movement.”
