Samford University’s Zephaniah Carico-McLennan, Kyle Kaufelds, Jess Edwards, and Kiera-Lee Abrahams were named the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, according to a May 6 announcement from the conference office.
The recognition comes after their performances at the 2026 Maroon and White Tune-Up hosted by Mississippi State. This event was Samford’s final competition before the upcoming conference championships.
Carico-McLennan ran a time of 1:46.59 in the men’s 800 meters, finishing fourth overall and achieving the top mark in the Southern Conference for this season. Kaufelds won the men’s javelin with a throw of 62.97 meters, maintaining his position as the regular-season leader in that event for the conference. Edwards posted a league-leading time of 2:03.53 in the women’s 800 meters, placing second by just 0.12 seconds. Abrahams tied for first place in the conference standings for women’s long jump with her winning distance of 6.09 meters.
The next major event for these athletes will be at the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships scheduled to begin Monday, May 11 in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
