The Samford University baseball team lost to East Tennessee State University by a score of 6-4 in the final game of their three-game series on April 4 at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

The loss brings Samford’s record to 14-16 overall and 2-4 in Southern Conference play, while ETSU improves to 21-8 overall and 6-3 in conference action. The outcome marks another setback for the Bulldogs as they continue their season.

“This was another tough outcome for us,” Samford head coach Tony David said. “I thought both starters were really good. Berry has been great for us every time out and was dominant again today. Malone was electric again for us on the backend to give us a chance. In the end today was just about not getting the big hit. Not once all day. We had a lot of base runners and opportunities. We took our walks but the big hit with runners on and the extra base hit eluded us for the most part the last two days. The wind blowing in heavily all weekend was not good for either offense with just the one home run hit. On these days where hitting it out the park is almost impossible we have to find ways to manufacture runs.”

Trey Higgins led Samford at bat, going two-for-three with one run batted in, while Pierce Dutton and Jackson Harris each collected two hits as well. Austin Tommasini took his first loss of the season after pitching over two innings in relief, giving up three runs on five hits.

For ETSU, Henry Ferguson went two-for-four with an RBI, Tristin Curless went two-for-five with an RBI, and Tyler Fetterman added two hits at bat. Cooper Jones earned his second win of the year by pitching over three innings without allowing any runs.

Samford scored early with single runs in both the first and second innings before ETSU responded by taking control during middle frames and adding insurance runs late in the game.

Looking ahead, Samford will travel to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama on Tuesday, April 7 at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
