The Samford softball team defeated Furman 17-1 on Apr. 19, completing a Southern Conference sweep in Greenville, South Carolina. The Bulldogs set new season highs in runs, hits, and RBI during the five-inning run-rule win and improved their overall record to 22-26 and their conference record to 11-4.
The series was marked by dominant offense from Samford, who outscored Furman 39-3 over the weekend and extended their winning streak to five games. The Bulldogs took an early lead with four runs in the first inning, including home runs by Brandy Phillips and Sydnie Ferrant. In the second inning, they added five more runs with contributions from Addison Smith, Katie Hart, Joi Hubbard, Olivia Shaw, Katie Campbell—who hit her first home run of the day—and Brooke Wildes.
Samford continued to build its lead as Shaw hit a two-run homer in the third inning. Ferrant, Hubbard and Shaw each drove in additional runs with singles in the fourth before Campbell closed out scoring with her second home run of the game—a three-run shot to center field.
Pitcher Sara Bond earned her fifth win of the season after pitching three innings while allowing only two hits and one run. Reese Hickey finished out the game with two scoreless innings of relief. The Bulldogs’ defense did not commit any errors during the game.
With this win Samford remains tied for second place with Western Carolina in conference standings behind UNCG. The team will play next against West Georgia on Tuesday; West Georgia currently holds a record of 13-35 this season.
