The Samford softball team will finish its regular season at home against the University of North Carolina Greensboro in a three-game series beginning Saturday, May 2. The matchup features the top two teams in the Southern Conference, with Samford needing to win all three games to secure the regular-season championship.
This series is important as it will determine which team claims the conference’s top spot before postseason play. Samford enters with a 25-27 overall record and a 13-5 mark in league play, while UNCG holds a 37-16 overall record and leads the conference at 15-3.
The Bulldogs had recently won seven consecutive games before dropping their last contest against East Tennessee State University. Olivia Shaw has posted a .441 batting average during conference play, and Katie Campbell leads both the team and SoCon with a school-record 18 home runs this season.
Samford’s pitching staff has also been recognized for its performance, earning Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for three straight weeks. Reese Hickey most recently received this award after throwing a complete game shutout against ETSU. Makinley Turner has reduced her earned run average to 2.87 by shutting out opponents in five of her last six appearances.
The first game of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m., with live statistics and streaming links available online. Fans can find more information about Samford softball on the official athletics website or by following team social media accounts.
