Senator Katie Boyd Britt has voiced strong criticism of Democratic lawmakers regarding ongoing government funding negotiations. In a series of posts on October 9, 2025, Britt accused Democrats of leveraging essential funding for vulnerable populations in exchange for increased government spending and policy changes.
On her social media account, Britt stated, “Democrats are holding funding hostage for the most vulnerable among us—women, infants, and children—over a proposal that includes $1.5 trillion in new spending, eliminates a $50 billion rural hospital fund, and allows for free health care coverage for illegal aliens. It’s that https://t.co/pm0FAR66Mh” (October 9, 2025).
In a subsequent post later that day, she highlighted the scale of the proposed spending increases by Democrats: “Our government roughly spends $1.8 trillion a year. Among Democrats’ many radical demands, they’re holding the American people hostage over an extra $1.5 trillion to keep the government open for just 7 WEEKS. This is reckless and unserious, and Republicans won’t stand for it. https://t.co/u2tXm7uhmo” (October 9, 2025).
Addressing efforts to avoid a shutdown, Britt wrote: “Passing our clean, nonpartisan CR would have prevented a harmful and unnecessary government shutdown. But don’t take Senate Republicans’ word for it—just ask Chuck Schumer. https://t.co/xptVeQo0zX” (October 9, 2025).
The debate comes amid heightened tensions in Congress over federal funding measures as deadlines approach to avert a partial government shutdown. Continuing resolutions (CRs) are temporary bills often used by Congress to keep agencies funded while longer-term agreements are negotiated.
Senator Katie Boyd Britt represents Alabama in the U.S. Senate and has been an outspoken member on fiscal policy issues.
