UAB Softball announced on May 4 that Ashlyn Shirah and Caitlin Russell have both been named American Conference Honorable Mentions, marking the team’s first double weekly award of the season.
The recognition highlights Shirah’s performance over the weekend, where she hit two grand slams and drove in eight of the Blazers’ eleven runs. Shirah achieved a .444 batting average with four hits during games at Florida Atlantic. She also recorded a .500 on-base percentage and slugged 1.111 with ten total bases in Boca Raton. According to team records, Shirah is the first Blazer to hit multiple grand slams in a season since at least 2018.
Russell contributed by pitching five innings for UAB on Saturday, securing her seventh win of the season. She allowed only one earned run on three hits and three walks while striking out three batters from Florida Atlantic. Opposing hitters managed just a .176 average against her during that outing.
Shirah, Russell, and their teammates are preparing for their next challenge as they head to Greenville, North Carolina for the American Championships. The Blazers will play eighth-seeded Tulsa in the opening round of the tournament at 9 a.m. Central Time on Wednesday, May 6.
The recent honors reflect strong individual performances as UAB Softball enters postseason play.
