UAB right-handed pitcher Mason Steele and infielder Wesley Helms were named as Honorable Mentions in the American Conference’s weekly baseball awards, according to a March 30 announcement from the league office. This marks the first time either player has received this recognition.
The acknowledgment highlights individual performances during a week when both players contributed significantly to the team’s success. Such honors are part of regular updates by the conference, recognizing standout athletes across its member schools.
Steele, a junior from Headland, Alabama, pitched seven shutout innings in Friday’s series-opening win over Tulane. He struck out five batters and allowed only two hits on a career-high 103 pitches. His performance lowered his season earned run average to 4.06.
Helms had a strong offensive showing during UAB’s undefeated week, going nine-for-17 at the plate with seven runs scored and four runs batted in. He also hit his fourth home run of the season against Jacksonville State on Tuesday. Helms currently holds a .310 batting average—the third highest on the team—and an OPS of .880.
Other Blazers recognized earlier this season include Riley Miller (Week 1 Pitcher of the Week), Alex Dupuy (Week 3 Honorable Mention), and John Paul Head (Week 4 Player of the Week). The team will conclude its five-game homestand with a matchup against North Alabama at Young Memorial Field on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
