U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) recently submitted a statement to the Congressional Record in honor of Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack’s upcoming retirement after serving as Sheriff of Baldwin County for 17 years.
“Mr. President, I wish to recognize and congratulate Sheriff Huey ‘Hoss’ Mack on his retirement as Sheriff of Baldwin County, Alabama, and express my gratitude for his stalwart service to the people of Baldwin County and the State of Alabama,” stated Britt.
Sheriff Mack was born in Escambia County, Alabama, and raised in Baldwin County. His career in law enforcement was influenced by personal tragedy when his grandfather was murdered in 1982. He pursued education at Faulkner State Community College and Troy University, earning degrees in Criminal Justice and Human Resource Management.
Beginning his career at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in 1985, Mack served as a Medical Examiner Field Agent before becoming Chief Forensic Investigator. In 1989, he joined the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office as a Criminal Investigator and later became Chief Investigator.
Throughout his career, Mack participated in various task forces including the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Blue Lightning Task Force and the Child Abuse Task Force. Notably, he assisted rescue operations in New York City following the September 11 attacks.
Elected Sheriff of Baldwin County in 2006, Mack led efforts against violent crime and drug abuse over five terms. He also held leadership roles within professional organizations such as President of the Alabama Sheriff's Association and member of the National Sheriff's Association Board of Directors.
Mack's community involvement extended beyond law enforcement through roles with Rotary International, Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, Robertsdale Methodist Church, and Boy Scouts of America.
Senator Britt concluded her remarks by expressing gratitude for Mack’s dedication: “His career is defined by above-and-beyond dedication to strengthening law enforcement in Alabama.”
Sheriff Mack will retire from local law enforcement but will continue to serve as executive director of the Alabama Sheriffs Association.
