U.S. Senator Katie Britt recently appeared on CNN's State of the Union with Jake Tapper to discuss her bipartisan Laken Riley Act and the confirmation of President Trump's cabinet nominees. The proposed legislation mandates U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain illegal aliens who commit theft, burglary, larceny, or shoplifting offenses to prevent further crimes.

Senator Britt emphasized the significance of the act: “The Laken Riley Act is ultimately going to save lives. It is a commonsense piece of legislation, and it actually puts the talk that we have been having over the last four years into action.” She noted that Americans are ready for secure borders and safe communities.

She further explained, “At the end of the day if [an illegal alien] doesn’t commit a crime [after crossing the border illegally] they’re not subject to the Laken Riley Act.” The bill has advanced in the Senate with strong bipartisan support, passing 84-9.

In addition to discussing immigration, Senator Britt outlined her priorities as a new member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. She stressed the importance of quickly confirming President Trump's nominees like Pam Bondi for Attorney General. “What President Trump has done is, he has selected people who are willing to not move as business as usual,” said Senator Britt.

Jake Tapper also questioned Senator Britt about her efforts regarding radical Islamic terrorism threats. She had previously sent letters requesting briefings on threats from groups like ISIS-K but expressed disappointment at receiving no response from Senator Chuck Schumer.

“When you rewind to where [the attack in New Orleans] came from, in my opinion, this is a direct result of Biden’s failed policies across the world,” stated Senator Britt. She highlighted concerns over national security following recent events and emphasized equipping law enforcement agencies with necessary tools.
