Representative Terri A. Sewell, currently serving Alabama’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, recently expressed her condolences and legislative efforts through a series of tweets. Sewell has been an active member of Congress since replacing Artur Davis in 2011.
On May 21, 2025, Rep. Sewell shared her sorrow over the death of Congressman Gerry Connolly, who served Virginia’s 11th Congressional District. She stated: “I’m saddened to hear of the passing of my colleague Congressman Gerry Connolly. He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of service as the Representative for Virginia’s 11th Congressional District. My sincerest condolences are extended to his family and friends.”
In another tweet on the same day, Rep. Sewell discussed her amendment to expand healthcare coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). She wrote: “(1/3) Today, I offered an amendment to the GOP Tax Scam that would expand the ACA’s premium tax credits to Americans below 138% of the federal poverty line.” This amendment aims to provide financial relief by increasing premium tax credits for those below a certain income threshold.
Further elaborating on her healthcare initiative, Sewell added: “(2/3) This amendment—based on my Bridge to Medicaid bill—helps close the coverage gap for the working poor, those who make too little to qualify for current subsidies but too much to qualify for Alabama Medicaid.” Her proposal seeks to bridge gaps in healthcare coverage affecting low-income individuals who fall between existing subsidy qualifications.
Born in Huntsville, Alabama in 1965 and now residing in Birmingham at age 58, Terri Sewell has an extensive educational background with degrees from Princeton University, St Hilda’s College at Oxford University, and Harvard University.
