Representative Terri A. Sewell, who currently serves Alabama’s 7th district in the U.S. Congress, shared her opinions on recent developments in Alabama and beyond through a series of tweets on April 28, 2025. Sewell, who has been serving since 2011 after succeeding Artur Davis, addressed both state and national issues, particularly focusing on civil rights and community service. Sewell, 58, was born in Huntsville and resides in Birmingham. She holds degrees from Princeton, Oxford, and Harvard.
On April 28, 2025, Representative Sewell expressed dissatisfaction with Alabama’s acknowledgement of Confederate Memorial Day by announcing that she would utilize the day to advocate for the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. She also mentioned her efforts to protect Alabama’s civil rights sites, stating her opposition to actions by Trump and Musk. “It’s awful that the State of Alabama continues to celebrate Confederate Memorial Day. While state offices are closed, I will spend today advocating for the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and protecting Alabama’s civil rights sites from Trump and Musk’s DOGE cuts.”
Later that day, Sewell criticized recent budget cuts affecting community services. She noted that $2.5 million in AmeriCorps grants for Alabama were terminated unexpectedly by Trump and Musk, a decision she described as abandoning the youth committed to community service. “The cruel cuts continue. Trump and Musk have immediately terminated $2.5 million in AmeriCorps grants for the State of Alabama without any prior notice. They are abandoning the hard working young Americans who have chosen to serve their communities. Here’s just some of what”
Additionally, Sewell took a moment to commend her spring interns in D.C. for their support and hard work serving the constituents of Alabama’s 7th District. She expressed gratitude for their contributions through a brief message. “Shout out to my awesome spring D.C. interns!! Grateful for your service to Alabama’s 7th District!!! “
