Junious Buchanan, born September 10, 1940, NFL Hall of Famer raised in Birmingham

Junious Buchanan was born on September 10, 1940, in Gainesville, Alabama, and raised in Birmingham. He became a standout athlete in high school and continued his football career at Grambling State University. In 1963, he was the first overall pick in the AFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. He played 13 seasons as a defensive tackle. Buchanan was known for his size, speed, and durability. He helped the Chiefs win Super Bowl IV in 1970. He was selected to eight AFL All-Star games and was named to the AFL All-Time Team. In 1990, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His early years in Birmingham shaped his path to football success. His career helped open doors for future players from historically Black colleges. His connection to Birmingham remains a part of his story.
