UAB Baseball lost the final game of its series against Rice by a score of 10-3, as announced on May 3. The defeat allowed the Owls to complete a sweep over the Blazers.
The outcome is significant for UAB, which had taken an early lead in the game but could not hold off Rice’s offense. For the third time in the series, UAB scored first when Kevin Hall Jr. was hit by a pitch and later crossed home plate due to a Rice error.
Rice responded strongly starting in the bottom of the second inning, combining for seven runs over two frames. The Owls utilized bunts and singles to bring runners home, scoring three runs without an extra-base hit in one inning and four more in another after five consecutive batters reached base with hits. Colin Robson’s bunt single capped off that rally.
Three additional runs came for Rice in the fourth inning following singles from JC Davis and Lorenzo Rios. UAB managed to cut into Rice’s lead late when John Paul Head hit his league-leading 17th home run of the season, making it 10-3.
The loss marks Rice’s first sweep of UAB since taking all three games in Birmingham during 2023 and their first sweep at home since 2014. Head’s home run ties him for fifth most homers in a season at UAB and gives this year’s team sole possession of second place all-time for most team home runs with 67. Hall scored twice, marking his thirteenth multi-run game this season.
UAB will return to play Auburn at Regions Field on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
