UAB Baseball will travel to Houston for a three-game series against the Rice Owls, according to an April 30 announcement. The games are scheduled to take place at Reckling Park, with matchups set for Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday afternoon.

The series is significant as both teams compete within the American Conference and are looking to strengthen their positions in league standings. UAB currently holds a conference record of 12-6, tying them with East Carolina and UTSA at the top of the league.

Probable starting pitchers for UAB include Mason Steele or Chase Ingram on Friday, Carter Samuelson on Saturday, and a yet-to-be-named pitcher on Sunday. For Rice, Tanner Wiggins or Brayden Sharp will start Friday’s game while Ethan Sanders is expected to pitch Saturday. Sunday’s starter has not been announced by either team.

Rice enters the weekend with one of the best pitching staffs in the conference. The Owls have recorded a team ERA of 4.61, allowed only 237 runs this season—the third fewest in the conference—and have turned 42 double plays which leads The American. Their pitching staff has also caught 18 runners stealing this year.

For UAB, this season marks only the fifth time in program history that a team has hit more than 60 home runs during a single campaign. The Blazers’ total of 62 home runs leads all teams in The American Conference so far this year. John Paul Head is tied for sixth-most home runs (16) in school history for a single season; two more would move him into third place all-time at UAB.
