UAB won the opening game of its baseball series against Tulane on Mar. 27, with a final score of 9-6. The Blazers built an early lead and held off a late comeback attempt by Tulane to secure the victory at Young Memorial Field.
The win is significant for UAB as it improves their home record to 13-4 this season and keeps them competitive in their conference standings. The Blazers have shown strong performance when scoring first, now holding a 12-2 record in such games this year.
UAB took control early, scoring four runs in the second inning and extending their lead throughout the middle innings. Kevin Hall Jr. had a standout night, tying his career-high with three hits and setting a new personal best with four runs batted in. Mason Steele delivered seven shutout innings on the mound, allowing only two hits while striking out five batters for his third win of the season.
Tulane mounted a comeback in the ninth inning, scoring six runs and bringing the tying run to bat before Brendan Conner recorded two strikeouts to end the threat. Despite this rally, UAB managed to hold onto its three-run advantage.
Other notable performances included John Paul Head’s eighth multi-hit game of the season and Wesley Helms extending his on-base streak to thirteen games. Baylor Roberts also continued his strong play with his third multi-hit effort in five games.
The teams will meet again for the second game of their three-game set on Saturday at Young Memorial Field.
