UAB lost to Charlotte by a score of 10-8 in 10 innings on Sunday, May 10, after rallying from an early six-run deficit but ultimately falling short. The Niners secured the series with a two-run home run in the top of the tenth inning.
The game began with UAB’s Kevin Hall Jr. hitting a solo home run to center field for his ninth of the season. However, Charlotte responded with a seven-run second inning, stringing together seven consecutive hits and taking a commanding lead.
UAB answered back over the next two innings, including Brady Waugh’s sixth home run of the year and several runs that brought them within one. Both teams traded runs in the fourth inning before UAB tied it at eight apiece in the fifth thanks to an RBI groundout by Austin Pierzynski.
Relief pitchers Brendan Conner for UAB and Chase Carson for Charlotte kept both offenses quiet through much of the late game. Conner threw eight innings and set career highs with 105 pitches. The tie was broken when Alec DeMartino hit his second two-run homer of the day for Charlotte in extra innings.
Brady Waugh marked several milestones during this game: he launched UAB’s 70th home run this season, which leads The American conference; he also had three RBIs and matched his career high with three runs scored. Waugh and Landon Beaver each collected their team-high eighteenth multi-hit games.
UAB will play its final home game at Young Memorial Field this season on Tuesday against Troy Trojans.
