The UAB men’s golf team finished in fifth place at the American Athletic Conference Championship, closing the three-day event on April 29 with one of its best rounds of the season at The Ritz-Carlton Members Club in Sarasota, Florida.
The team’s performance is notable as they posted a final round score of 9-under 279, which was the third-best team score of the day and among their lowest rounds relative to par this season. UAB ended the championship at 18-under 846.
Four Blazers golfers placed inside the top 25 individually. Alvaro Huidobro led with a tie for ninth place at 8-under 208. Erik Olin finished inside the top fifteen with a score of 6-under 210. Morgan Slaton had a strong final round, shooting a four-under-par 68 to tie for fourteenth place, while Alejandro Fierro tied for twenty-fifth.
The consistent play throughout the week allowed UAB to secure a top-five finish against strong competition from across the league. No. 22 Charlotte won the team title for a second consecutive year with an overall score of forty-eight under par (816), and Memphis’ Diego Lourenco took individual medalist honors after winning in a playoff.
With this tournament concluded, UAB now awaits postseason selections and looks ahead to possible participation in NCAA Championship events.
