UAB Baseball secured a series win over Tulane with a 7-4 victory on Saturday, Mar. 28. The Blazers, now holding a record of 17-10 overall and 3-2 in conference play, scored seven runs—their lowest total in a win this season.
The game opened with UAB scoring in the first inning for the fifteenth time this year, as Brady Waugh singled to bring home Landon Beaver. Tulane responded in the second inning by taking a brief lead after scoring two runs through small ball tactics and timely singles.
UAB quickly regained control in the bottom of the second when Alex Dupuy drove in two runs on a single to left field. The score remained close until Tulane tied it again in the sixth inning with Mattias Haas bringing home Tye Wood on a sacrifice fly.
In response, UAB rallied during their half of the sixth inning. Andrew Hunt’s sacrifice fly gave them back the lead before Wesley Helms and Max Price added insurance runs with RBI singles. A defensive error by Tulane allowed another run, putting UAB ahead 7-3 entering the seventh.
Tulane managed one more run off reliever Riley Miller, but Miller held firm over three innings to earn his second save of the season and secure UAB’s victory.
With this result, UAB improved its home record to 14-4 and has now won eleven out of its last twelve games at Young Memorial Field. This marks their first conference series win of the season; last year they won only one such series. Notably, Wesley Helms recorded his ninth multi-hit game and extended his on-base streak to fourteen games while Alex Dupuy notched his team-leading tenth multi-hit performance.
The Blazers also drew thirteen walks during Saturday’s contest—second most for them this season—and reclaimed their league lead with twenty-seven double plays turned so far. The team aims for a sweep as they face Tulane again Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
