UAB women’s basketball secured a decisive 70-32 victory over Alcorn State on Monday night at Bartow Arena. The Blazers improved their season record to 5-5, while Alcorn State dropped to 3-6.
Cali Smallwood led the scoring for UAB with 18 points, making six three-pointers and matching her career high in that category. Eleecia Carter contributed 16 points, also hitting five three-pointers, which tied her personal best. Molly Moffitt and Monae’ Duffy each collected nine rebounds for the team. Sofia Munoz added nine points along with a team-high five assists, while Journey Armstead recorded seven assists and six points.
For Alcorn State, Jayda Bowen scored seven points, followed by Arene Iyekekpolor and Kiarra Henderson with six points each.
Smallwood “led all scorers with 18 points, connecting on six triples (6-for-8) to pace UAB’s perimeter attack and knocked down six field goals (6-for-9).” Carter “tallied 16 points, knocking down five three-pointers which matched her career-high.” Smallwood’s “six three-pointers matched her career high.” Munoz “chipped in nine points and a team-high five assists.”
UAB made 14 three-pointers during the game, accounting for 42 of its total points—this was their second highest mark for made threes this season. The team’s 38-point margin of victory is their largest so far this year. Defensively, the Blazers held Alcorn State to just five points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth. Over the final three quarters, UAB outscored their opponent by a margin of 55-22.
The Blazers limited Alcorn State to only 20 percent shooting from the field and 33 percent from beyond the arc. UAB shot 49 percent overall from the floor, made half of their attempts from three-point range, and converted on 61 percent of free throws.
After an early tie at four apiece in the first quarter, Alcorn State briefly took a lead before UAB responded with a run sparked by Smallwood and Moffitt’s three-pointers. The Blazers finished the first quarter ahead and extended their advantage throughout the game.
Looking ahead, UAB will play Mississippi Valley State at home on Saturday, December 20. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Central Time and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
