UAB women’s basketball lost 81-73 to Southern Miss on Sunday afternoon at Reed Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The Blazers now have a season record of 4-5, while Southern Miss improved to 7-3.
Sofia Munoz led UAB with a career-high 24 points, including four three-pointers and six free throws. Cali Smallwood contributed 16 points and seven rebounds, marking a career-best for her in rebounds. Monae’ Duffy achieved her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds, matching her career-high in rebounds for the fifth time. Molly Moffitt also scored in double figures with 12 points.
Southern Miss was paced by Hayleigh Breland’s 25 points and Morgan Sieper’s 16 points. The Golden Eagles shot 50 percent from the field, made 44 percent of their three-point attempts, and converted on 61 percent of their free throws.
The game featured frequent shifts in momentum, with both teams holding eight-point leads at different times. There were a total of 18 lead changes and 11 ties throughout the contest. UAB led for more than half the game and entered the fourth quarter ahead by five points after an effective third period where they limited USM to just over thirty percent shooting.
However, Southern Miss outscored UAB in the final quarter, closing with a decisive 26-point effort that included a late-game run to secure victory.
UAB will return home to face Alcorn State on Monday, December 15 at Bartow Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Central Time and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
