UAB’s Season Concludes With Loss to Florida Atlantic in C-USA Tournament

17

The UAB baseball team fell 11-1 to Florida Atlantic in an elimination game at the Conference USA Tournament on Thursday night.

Florida Atlantic (35-22) struck first with three runs in the first. The Owls extended their lead to 7-0 with four runs in the fourth.

UAB (31-25) struggled to plate runners in scoring position in Thursday's setback, going 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The Blazers loaded the bases in the third inning with just one out when catcher Henry Hunter roped a single to right field, but a pair of fly-ball outs ended the UAB scoring threat.

Peyton Puckett and John Marc Mullins helped get the Blazers on the board in the fifth inning when Puckett tripled off the left-field wall. Mullins followed Puckett's leadoff triple with a sacrifice fly to left field to trim FAU's lead to 7-1.

Florida Atlantic scored one run in the fifth and three runs in the seventh to seal the 11-1 run-rule victory.

The Blazers, who made their first postseason appearance since 2018 in this week's C-USA Tournament, finish the season with a 31-25 record. UAB's 31 wins are the program's most since 2015 and rank as the most for a first-year head coach in Blazer baseball history.

UAB recorded nine series victories during the 2022 season, securing its first series win over a top-five opponent since 2009 when the Blazers took two games out of three against No. 4 Southern Miss at Young Memorial Field.

UAB also shined in midweek play, finishing the season with an 8-3 record in midweek contests. Two of UAB's eight midweek victories came over Alabama, marking the Blazers' first season sweep of the Crimson Tide since 2012.
