Disaster Response Update: Hurricane Ian (updated October 10)

Update from the UM Disaster Relief Warehouse in Decatur

Our major UMCOR supply need is the Cleaning Bucket. We shipped a 53-foot trailer of relief supplies to Cypress UMC in Ft Myer, Florida last Tuesday. On the truck was cleaning buckets, tarps, wood strips and insect repellant.

We are asking churches to focus on cleaning buckets if they are looking to work on UMCOR supplies.

Sometimes putting a whole cleaning bucket together can be overwhelming. Below is a short list of items we need to restock our cleaning bucket line at the Decatur facility that Sunday School classes, small groups and families can focus on

  • K95 or N95 masks
  • 16-34oz Liquid Dish Soap
  • 32-64oz Liquid Laundry Soap (NO POWDER)
  • 16-40oz Household Cleaner (NO SPRAY CONTAINERS)
  • Scrub Buddies 5 pack Scouring Pads. (NO COPPER, STEEL WOOL OR SOAP CONTAINING)
  • 50ft Clothes Line
  • Heavy Duty Kitchen Gloves
  • Leather Palm or All Leather Work Gloves
Also Other Supplies:

  • 2 Gallon Sprayers
  • ~20" Box Fans
  • D Grip Handle Shovels
  • Garden Rakes
  • 15-50 ft OUTDOOR Extension Cords
  • Flat Pry Bars 12"-22"
Folks can volunteer at our website www.umdisasterwarehouse.com volunteer page. Please review the calendar and complete the volunteer request form to start the scheduling process.

Monetary donations for transportation and purchasing supplies as needed can be made by check to UM Disaster Relief Warehouse and mailed to:

Hurricane Ian Update From UMCOR

Hurricane Ian has devastated Florida and is now impacting South Carolina.  While authorities have not yet given the all-clear to enter affected areas, UMCOR and its local partners have been hard at work preparing for storm response and recovery.

Reminder: do not self-deploy to an active disaster area. [The North Alabama Conference will share information when ERT Teams and other volunteers are invited to affected areas.]

Supplies are headed to Florida and initial solidarity grants have been issued to both the Florida and South Carolina Annual Conferences to address immediate needs.

How your congregation can help:

Cleaning supply kits are needed. Churches interested in providing cleaning kits can find information about kit components and assembly instructions here. UMCOR encourages churches to coordinate their shipments with their local affiliate warehouses. North Alabama’s UM Disaster Relief Warehouse is located in Decatur (3220 Highway 31 S Building F, Decatur, Al 35603). The warehouse is run by volunteers. Please always contact the warehouse at 256-341-9961 to arrange supply drop offs or to schedule volunteers from your church to serve in the warehouse. You can find more information at https://umdisasterwarehouse.com.

Churches and individuals can financially support the work of UMCOR and its local partners by giving to UMCOR U.S. Disaster Response and Recovery fund (Advance #901670). By giving through The Advance, 100% of your donation reaches your chosen mission project or ministry.
