UAB Suffers 44-38 Double Overtime Loss to UTSA

The UAB Football team (4-5, 2-4 C-USA) fell in double overtime to UTSA (7-2, 5-0 C-USA) 44-38 after erasing a 14-point fourth quarter deficit. Jacob Zeno threw for 332 yards and recorded three touchdowns (one rushing) while DeWayne McBride added 141 yards and two touchdowns.

Zeno finished the game with career highs in completions (27), attempts (38), yards (332) and passing touchdowns (2). McBride, the nation's leading rusher, tallied his ninth straight 100 yard rushing game and became just the second player in school history to surpass  3,000 career rushing yards.

Noah Wilder led the defense with 13 tackles to mark his fourth game this season with double-digit tackles, but UTSA quarterback Frank Harris threw for 285 yards four touchdowns in leading the Roadrunners to victory.

UTSA jumped out an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter after completing an 8-play, 99-yard drive that was capped off by a 20-yard touchdown pass from Frank Harris to Zakhari Franklin.

The Roadrunners added a pair of field goals over the next three drives to extend the lead to 13-0 in the second quarter.

UAB responded just a few plays later. McBride answered with a 68-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to six. The carry was McBride's 13th touchdown of the season and his 15th carry of 20 or more yards, which leads the nation.

The Roadrunners tacked on another field goal to make it a two-score game at 16-7 with just over two minutes remaining in the first half. UAB drove into the red zone and added a field goal just before the end of the second quarter with the help of a 27-yard carry by Jermaine Brown Jr. UTSA took a knee to enter the half with a 16-10 lead.

UAB took its first lead of the game in the third quarter after McBride's second touchdown of the game capped off a 13-play, 90-yard drive.

With the Blazers leading 17-16, UTSA drove right down the field. The drive featured a big 42 yard catch and run from Frank Harris to Kevorian Barnes. Barnes capped the drive with a one yard carry into the end zone to give the Roadrunners a 23-17 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The Blazers reached the UTSA 21-yard line on the ensuing drive but came up short on fourth down to turn the ball back over to the Roadrunners. UTSA took a two-score lead after a quick three-minute scoring drive that was finished with Harris and Franklin's second touchdown connection of the day. The Roadrunners also converted their two-point try to make it a 31-17 contest.

Trailing by 14 with under 10 minutes to go, the Blazers fought right back and drove down the field. On fourth and six from the UTSA 12, Jacob Zeno found TJ Jones for an 11-yard gain, keeping the drive alive. Zeno punched it in two plays later to cut the deficit in half.

The UAB defense came up with a big stop as UTSA attempted to run out the remainder of the clock. The Roadrunners punted it away to UAB with just over one minute remaining and no Blazer timeouts.

Needing to score, Zeno and Tejhuan Palmer connected three times for 29 yards to help the Blazers move into UTSA territory. Zeno's toss deep down the sideline found Trea Shropshire for the game-tying touchdown with only 15 seconds remaining.

With the score tied at 38, UTSA elected to take a knee and go into overtime. UAB got the ball first, starting at the 25. Zeno found Palmer in the back of the end zone on a critical third and goal from the 11 to go up by a touchdown.

UTSA answered right back, as Harris completed a short two-yard pass to Tykee Ogle-Kellogg to tie it up. In the second overtime, the Roadrunners started with the football. This time, they found the end zone in just a few plays as Harris found Joshua Cephus from 11-yards out. However, the two-point conversion was no good.

The Blazers were unable to find the end zone in the second overtime period, falling 44-38.

UAB is back home next Saturday for Senior Day and Salute to Service. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
