UAB Travels to Starkville for the Bulldog Relays
UAB Track & Field returns to action this weekend as they travel to Starkville, Mississippi, to compete in the 2023 Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays. The Blazers come off their first week of outdoor competition with over ten personal bests at the 2023 Tiger Track Classic.
"We're ready to get back to action this weekend at Mississippi State," said head coach Kurt Thomas. "We started the outdoor season last week well and highlighted some areas we need to improve on."
The Blazers had numerous top-ten finishes, which boded well to begin the outdoor season for the Green and Gold. This week, the Blazers plan to include more athletes in the rotation after some did not participate last week due to illness and injuries. "We're excited to have them back in some events. Having our distance runners back will be great to get their season going. Kat Duren and Makiyah Sills will return in sprint and hurdle events, which will be key for our season."
The Meet features 15 teams on the docket, including teams UAB regularly competes against such as Alabama State, Samford, and Jackson State. Runners in the Green and Gold participating for the first time include Sangie Lincoln-Velez and Kyra Hayes in the 1500m.
Returners such as Shauntia Landrum, who had a second-place finish in the women's triple jump, will jump again in the Starkville meet. In throws, Tia Espinoza and Zoe WInkenweder represent the Blazers in hammer throw, shot put, and discus. Megan Hamilton-Strong, Mya McDanal, and a few more Blazers will compete in javelin.
"We're just ready to keep improving, get better meet after meet and build towards the outdoor championships in May." said Thomas.
