Washington, D.C. - Representative Gary Palmer (AL-06) has reintroduced the Retirement Freedom Act, a bill that aims to give seniors the ability to make healthcare decisions for themselves. In a statement, Rep. Palmer expressed his concern about the current system, saying, "Under current laws, seniors are unable to make healthcare decisions for themselves. This is completely unacceptable and why I'm reintroducing the Retirement Freedom Act. People should not be forced to give up their private insurance because their Social Security is being held hostage. Our senior citizens deserve to be empowered to take more control over their own medical decisions. Thankfully, this bill would do just that."

The Retirement Freedom Act seeks to decouple Social Security and Medicare, allowing seniors to keep their private insurance without losing Social Security benefits. This is a response to an executive order issued by the Trump administration that accomplished the same goal. However, the Biden administration has since revoked the executive order, reattaching Social Security and Medicare. As a result, seniors are now required to enroll in Medicare Part A or risk forfeiting their Social Security benefits. This linkage between the two programs is seen by many as an overreach by the Social Security Administration and a restriction on seniors' freedom of choice in their healthcare.

If passed, the Retirement Freedom Act would provide seniors with the option to choose their own healthcare insurance without fear of losing their Social Security benefits. This legislation aims to empower seniors and give them more control over their medical decisions.

The Retirement Freedom Act has garnered support from various groups. The Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) praised the bill, with President Bob Carlstrom stating, "We fully support the Retirement Freedom Act. Seniors should not be forced into a one-size-fits-all healthcare system. This bill would give them the freedom to choose the healthcare plan that best suits their needs."

The text of the legislation can be found [here](link).

Rep. Palmer's bill has the potential to bring about significant changes to the healthcare system for seniors. By decoupling Social Security and Medicare, seniors would have the freedom to make their own choices when it comes to their healthcare. This would eliminate the requirement for seniors to enroll in Medicare Part A and allow them to maintain their private insurance if they so choose.

As the Retirement Freedom Act moves through the legislative process, it will be interesting to see how it is received by lawmakers and the public. The bill has the potential to spark a larger conversation about the role of government in healthcare and the importance of individual choice.
