WASHINGTON, D.C., April 5, 2024 — U.S. Senators Katie Britt (R-Ala.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) have called on Senate leadership to schedule a classified briefing on the escalating terror threats faced by the United States.

The Senators expressed their concerns regarding the increasing threats from radical Islamic terror groups, particularly ISIS-K, an offshoot of ISIS primarily based in Afghanistan. They emphasized the repercussions of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, stating, "As many experts have warned, the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan has created new threats and once again transformed the country into a safe haven and operational base for terrorist groups."

Highlighting the global reach of ISIS-K, the Senators pointed out recent attacks by the group, including a suicide bombing in Iran and a massacre at a concert hall in Moscow. They also noted thwarted attacks planned by ISIS-K in Germany and the Netherlands, underscoring the group's potential and intent to strike worldwide, including targeting the United States.

Requesting immediate action, Senators Britt and Graham urged for an all-member classified briefing to address the rising threat posed by radical Islamic terror groups against both domestic and international targets. They also called for an update on the Biden Administration's strategy and capabilities for Afghanistan, setting a deadline of April 18th, 2024, for the briefing.

The Senators' letter to Majority Leader Senator Chuck Schumer and Minority Leader Senator Mitch McConnell emphasized the critical need for comprehensive information and strategic planning to counter the evolving threats posed by terrorist organizations.

The call for a classified briefing comes in the wake of growing concerns about the resurgence of terrorism following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and the need for proactive measures to safeguard national security in the face of these threats.
