U.S. Senators Katie Britt, Chuck Grassley, and Ben Cardin have called on President Biden to address the issue of stalled intercountry adoptions with China. The senators are urging the President to advocate for families affected by China's decision to end adoptions for those without Chinese familial ties. Representatives Erin Houchin and Val Hoyle are also leading this bipartisan initiative, which has garnered support from 103 members of Congress.

Currently, 300 children, some with health conditions, have been matched with American families. This situation impacts at least 16 families in Alabama. The lawmakers stated, "We request that you act in the best interest of these children and families by urging the PRC to fulfill and uphold the commitment the country has made."

The letter highlights that American families are ready to provide for the long-term medical and emotional needs of these children. "Many of these children know that they have a home," they wrote, emphasizing that preparations have been underway since families were notified about their matches.

Senator Britt and her colleagues noted a recent State Department notice indicating that China might allow adoptions for families from some countries. They urged President Biden to ensure this possibility includes the United States.

China ended its intercountry adoption program on August 28, 2024.
