U.S. Senators Katie Britt and Cindy Hyde-Smith recently visited the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West and the Joint Interagency Task Force South headquarters to better understand the agencies' roles in combatting illicit narcotics, illegal migration, and human trafficking. Both senators are members of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, with Senator Britt serving as ranking member of the panel responsible for funding the USCG. Admiral Linda Fagan, Commandant of the Coast Guard, accompanied them during this visit.
Senator Britt emphasized the importance of supporting the U.S. Coast Guard: "The U.S. Coast Guard’s commitment to protecting our maritime borders is nothing short of heroic, and I appreciated the opportunity to meet with many of the courageous Americans who patrol our seas and defend our shores." She further stated her priority would be ensuring that "the U.S. Coast Guard has the resources and support needed to keep our homeland safe."
Senator Hyde-Smith echoed these sentiments: "Most Americans are eager to see a much-needed increased focus on border security." She expressed her readiness to work with Coast Guard leadership to reinforce national security as a top priority.
During their visit, Britt and Hyde-Smith were briefed on challenges faced by USCG Sector Key West and JIATF-S. The trip highlighted ongoing issues related to border security enforcement along maritime routes.
USCG Sector Mobile in Alabama plays a significant role within this framework. It is part of the 8th Coast Guard District, housing various units such as Cutters, Small Boat Stations, Aids to Navigation Teams, and Marine Safety Detachments. Additionally, it hosts one of the largest non-industrial employers in Mobile—the Aviation Training Center—where training for USCG pilots takes place.
