U.S. Senators Katie Britt from Alabama and Ted Cruz from Texas have reintroduced a constitutional amendment aimed at imposing term limits on members of Congress. The proposed amendment would restrict U.S. Senators to two six-year terms and House Representatives to three two-year terms after its enactment.
Senator Britt expressed her support for the amendment, stating, "Our country deserves leaders truly accountable to the people they serve, which is why I proudly cosponsored the U.S. Term Limits Amendment as one of my first actions in the 119th Congress." She emphasized her commitment to representing Alabamians and supporting reforms in Washington.
Shanna Chamblee from U.S. Term Limits presented Senator Britt with an award recognizing her dedication to amending the Constitution for congressional term limits. This marks the second consecutive Congress where Britt has been acknowledged for her pledge to support this initiative. Chamblee stated, "U.S. Term Limits is proud to acknowledge Senator Britt as a champion of term limits."
The reintroduction of the amendment saw support from other Senate Republicans including Mike Lee, Rick Scott, Rand Paul, Todd Young, Steve Daines, Cynthia Lummis, Bill Hagerty, Eric Schmitt, Roger Marshall, and Jim Banks.
Senator Cruz highlighted the importance of term limits by saying, "Term limits are critical to fixing what’s wrong with Washington, D.C." He argued that such measures would ensure accountability and align with the vision of citizen legislators serving temporarily before returning home.
Prior to her election, Senator Britt signed a pledge committing to cosponsor and vote for the U.S. Term Limits Amendment. She has consistently supported Senator Cruz's resolution proposing this term limit amendment in both recent Congressional sessions.
