U.S. Senator Katie Britt's proposed legislation, the Laken Riley Act, has cleared a significant procedural hurdle in the Senate. The bill passed a cloture vote with a 61-35 majority, setting it up for final passage soon.
Senator Britt expressed her gratitude to her colleagues for their support. "This bipartisan, bicameral legislation will save lives, and it will help prevent another American family from feeling the pain Laken Riley’s loved ones feel every day," she stated. She added that the act would honor Laken Riley's legacy and enhance public safety.
The Laken Riley Act mandates U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain illegal aliens involved in theft-related offenses to prevent further crimes. It also allows states to take legal action against federal officials who fail to enforce immigration laws or violate them.
Initially introduced by Senator Britt along with Senators John Fetterman and Ruben Gallego, the act received strong bipartisan support with an 84-9 vote, enabling its progression in the Senate. A motion to proceed was passed on January 13, followed by the successful cloture vote on January 17.
The final Senate vote on this legislation is expected shortly and requires only a simple majority for approval. The bill currently has 53 cosponsors.
