U.S. Senators Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville have announced that the NCAA's first and second rounds of March Madness basketball games will return to Birmingham in March 2028. The events are scheduled for March 17-19, marking a significant return for the city as a host for these collegiate tournaments.

This decision comes after Senators Britt and Tuberville wrote to NCAA President Charlie Baker, advocating for future events to be held in Alabama. Senator Britt expressed her enthusiasm by stating, "This is a slam dunk for Birmingham. I am thrilled the first two rounds of March Madness in 2028 will be held in our great state." She also highlighted the possibility of Alabama's teams starting their journey to the Final Four at home.

Senator Tuberville emphasized Alabama's history with intercollegiate athletics, noting that "Birmingham has the facilities, businesses, and infrastructure to make this a successful tournament." He expressed confidence that fans from across the country would enjoy their time in Birmingham.

Historically, Birmingham was part of the road to the Final Four from 1982 through 2008 on eleven occasions. After nearly 15 years without hosting such events, Birmingham successfully hosted first and second-round games in 2023, with all games sold out and featuring both Auburn and Alabama teams. Additionally, Birmingham recently underwent a $125 million renovation of its civic center.

Senator Katie Britt serves on several Senate committees including Appropriations, Banking, and Rules and Administration. Senator Tommy Tuberville is involved with committees related to Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, and HELP.
