U.S. Senator Katie Britt has expressed her support for the recently passed Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2024, a bipartisan effort aimed at enhancing Alabama's water infrastructure. According to Senator Britt, "Alabama’s inland water infrastructure will be getting the support it needs to boost our economy and our national security."

The WRDA bill is designed to authorize projects by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Civil Works Program, focusing on improvements in ports and harbors, inland waterways, flood protection, and other water resources infrastructure. Specific provisions in the bill address construction needs at Alabama's Coffeeville and Demopolis Locks and Dams, as well as navigation improvements at the Wilson Lock and Dam.

Senator Britt highlighted that the bill supports various initiatives including beneficial use dredging in Mobile Harbor and a flood risk management project in Selma. "I was proud to secure needed provisions in the 2024 WRDA bill that will prioritize Alabama," she stated.

Alabama boasts nearly 1,270 miles of navigable inland waterways connecting with over 15,000 miles across 23 states. The state's Port of Mobile is recognized for its significant role in trade, being named one of the fastest-growing ports in the nation.

Additionally, the WRDA includes measures for efficient federal property use and reauthorizes economic development programs like the Economic Development Administration (EDA), which have not been updated for almost two decades.

In November 2024, Senator Britt led efforts alongside other Alabama delegates to request funding from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for maintenance of Alabama's waterways due to recent lock failures.

As part of her role on the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senator Britt secured $73 million for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under this year's Energy and Water Development Act. She also advanced $25.07 million for next year's fiscal budget.
