Terri A. Sewell, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Alabama’s 7th district since 2011, recently took to social media to express her concerns regarding the impacts of a federal grant and loan freeze initiated by former President Donald Trump. The tweets highlight potential consequences for various community programs and services.
On January 28, 2025, Rep. Sewell tweeted about the ramifications of Trump's freeze on federal grants and loans: "Trump's illegal freeze on nearly all federal grants/loans will have immediate and devastating impacts on our district and EVERY community in America. Families cut off from food assistance. Student loan disbursements halted. Community health centers unable to serve patients..."
In a follow-up tweet on the same day, she emphasized additional effects of funding cuts: "TRIO and Head Start programs starved of funding. Infrastructure projects halted. Universities without research funding. The list goes on. This chaos and cruelty must stop!"
Later that day, Sewell addressed an issue specific to Alabama’s Medicaid system: "My office has received reports that Alabama’s Medicaid portal is shut down. More than 1 million Alabamians rely on Medicaid along with the providers, hospitals, & clinics that serve them. The Trump Administration needs to restore it NOW!"
