U.S. Senator Katie Britt's Laken Riley Act has been signed into law by President Donald J. Trump, marking the first bill he has enacted as the 47th President of the United States. This legislation is noted as a significant step in immigration enforcement and border security, being described as the most substantial measure of its kind in nearly thirty years.
Senator Britt expressed her honor at witnessing President Trump sign the act into law, highlighting it as a historic moment. "Today, I was honored to join President Trump as he signed the Laken Riley Act into law. This landmark bill is historic for many reasons, including the fact this was the first bill he signed into law as the 47th President," she stated.
The act's introduction came from Senator Britt and Congressman Mike Collins during their respective tenures in Congress. The legislation includes provisions such as Senator John Cornyn’s amendment related to assault on law enforcement officers and an aspect mirroring Sarah’s Law from Senator Joni Ernst. Sarah’s Law mandates detention for illegal aliens committing crimes that result in death or serious injury.
The act will require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain illegal aliens involved in specific criminal activities to prevent reoffending. It also provides states with standing to take civil actions against federal officials who do not enforce immigration laws properly.
Senator Ted Budd commented on the legislation's significance: "The American people sent a clear message on November 5th: It is time to return to law and order. President Trump pledged to make America safe again, and his signing of the Laken Riley Act is another promise kept."
Senator Britt emphasized her commitment to addressing illegal migration and strengthening border security, affirming that this new law reflects her dedication to making America safer.
