U.S. Senators Katie Britt and Lindsey Graham have introduced a bipartisan resolution aimed at countering the potential threat posed by a nuclear-armed Iran. The resolution, which is also bicameral, emphasizes that the United States, Israel, and allied nations should consider all options to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
Senator Britt stated, "Iran’s continued pursuit of nuclear weapons poses a clear threat to the US, Israel, and our allies. Now more than ever, we must stand up to Iran and use every tool in our toolbox to address these threats." She added that the resolution sends a bipartisan message that the U.S. will not tolerate aggression from Tehran.
The proposed resolution asserts that Iran's pursuit of nuclear capabilities is a credible threat to the United States and an existential threat to Israel and other Middle Eastern allies. It calls for all options to be considered in addressing this issue.
Senator Graham warned of the consequences if Iran were to obtain nuclear weapons: "If the Iranian Ayatollah and his henchman obtain a nuclear weapon, it would be one of the most destabilizing and dangerous events in world history." He further noted that while this resolution is not an authorization for military force, it aims to establish clarity on Iran's nuclear intentions.
Graham also acknowledged his colleagues' leadership on this matter: "Finally, I’d like to recognize the leadership of my colleagues, Senators Fetterman and Britt and Representatives Moskowitz and Lawler, on the issue of countering a nuclear-armed Iran."
If passed, the resolution would call for Iran to cease activities threatening U.S. national security interests, including halting uranium enrichment and development related to nuclear warheads.
Additional cosponsors include Senator John Fetterman and Representatives Jared Moskowitz and Mike Lawler. Senator Britt has been critical of what she describes as weak policies from the Biden-Harris Administration regarding Iran's nuclear ambitions.
