U.S. Senators Katie Britt, Maggie Hassan, Susan Collins, and Tina Smith have reintroduced the Rural Obstetrics Readiness Act to enhance obstetric care in rural areas. The bipartisan legislation aims to assist rural health facilities in preparing for obstetric emergencies by establishing training programs for non-specialists and providing federal grants for equipment upgrades. It also proposes a pilot program for teleconsultation services.

"Alabama women deserve access to high-quality care throughout their pregnancy journeys, no matter their zip code," said Senator Britt. "The Rural Obstetrics Readiness Act would equip rural hospitals with the tools, training, and resources to deliver urgent obstetric care throughout Alabama."

The initiative addresses challenges in Alabama where over a third of counties are classified as "maternity care deserts." Recent closures of labor and delivery departments in several Alabama hospitals highlight the issue's urgency.

"No pregnant woman should struggle to access quality, affordable health care they need because of their zip code," said Senator Hassan. "This bipartisan legislation will provide targeted support so that health care facilities in rural New Hampshire and rural communities across the country can get the equipment, training, and resources that they need."

Senator Collins noted the importance of addressing labor unit closures nationwide: "By creating new opportunities to improve obstetric readiness in rural communities through skills training, workforce development, and telehealth partnerships... more rural Maine communities have access to the maternal care they need."

Senator Smith highlighted concerns faced by women traveling long distances for maternity services: "I’ve heard from Minnesotans who have to drive hours... just to get to care."

The Rural Obstetrics Readiness Act is part of Senator Britt’s ongoing efforts towards improving maternal health. She previously collaborated on designating January 23 as Maternal Health Awareness Day and introduced the NIH IMPROVE Act alongside other legislative actions supporting maternal health research.

Senator Britt has also secured funding for various initiatives aimed at modernizing medical equipment and enhancing healthcare services in Alabama.
