U.S. Senator Katie Britt, along with Senators Tina Smith, Kevin Cramer, and John Fetterman, have reintroduced the Bus Rolling Stock Modernization Act. This bipartisan initiative aims to support domestic bus manufacturing by updating outdated Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations.
Senator Britt emphasized the importance of American-made vehicles for connecting communities in Alabama. "Our bipartisan legislation supports domestic manufacturing and helps local transit agencies better serve our communities," she stated.
The current FTA regulations impose 40-year-old payment practices on bus manufacturers, leading to high costs and market exits despite demand for new vehicles. The proposed act would allow manufacturers to apply for advanced payments up to 20%, facilitating investment in labor and machinery.
Senator Smith highlighted the benefits of the bill for Minnesotans' daily commutes and job opportunities. "This bill makes a commonsense update to current practice by cutting unnecessary red tape," she said.
Senator Cramer noted the advantages for North Dakota's local transit agencies and manufacturers like Motor Coach Industries in Pembina. "Our legislation cuts unnecessary red tape," he remarked.
Senator Fetterman addressed issues faced by Pennsylvania's transit agencies due to outdated rules. "This bill fixes that by giving local agencies the flexibility they need," he commented.
As Chairman of the Housing, Transportation, and Community Development Subcommittee, Senator Britt is committed to promoting affordable and accessible transit solutions across urban and rural areas.
